SNABB UTVECKLING

Smidesbolaget i Degerfors växte från sju till 65 anställda och bolaget såldes till Avesta Sheffield år 2000. Då var anläggningen moderniserad och ett fullskaligt ”Steel Service Center” för rostfritt stål, enligt den vision Anders Persson hade.

SKANDINAVIENS STÖRSTA KANTPRESS

1991 investerar Smidesbolaget i ny kantpress – Skandinaviens största. Pressen är 13 meter lång, väger 280 ton och har en presskraft på 2 000 ton.

I samband med investeringen blir Avesta Sheffield delägare till 20 procent i Smidesbolaget. Anledningen var att de förlade bockningen av sin i Degerfors viktigaste produkt – rostfri kemikalietankersplåt – till Smidesbolaget.

VATTENSKÄRNING OCH BÅTBYGGE

Vattenskärning av grovplåt infördes tidigt på Smidesbolaget i Degerfors. Tekniken visade sig passa ett udda projekt, nämligen tillverkning av mallen till Team EFs kappseglingsbåtar för Whitbread Round The World Race 97-98. Kappseglingen bestod av en 51 500 kilometer lång segling i nio etapper; Southampton – Kapstaden – Freemantle – Sydney – Auckland – San Sebastiao – Fort Lauderdale – Baltimore – La Rochelle och åter till Southampton.

Konstruktören i USA, båtbyggarna i Göteborg och vattenskärarna i Degerfors kunde enkelt samarbeta genom att använda sig av det då nya Internet. Ritningar överfördes till maskinstyrningen och mallar till båtarna skars ut. Sedan göts två likadana båtskrov med hjälp av mallarna, en för en båt med kvinnlig besättning och en för en båt med manlig besättning. Extra roligt var att den ena EF-båten vann!

Som de landkrabbor vi är inkasserade vi aldrig vår ersättning, en segling med vinnarbåten!

Entreprenörsanda och okonventionella lösningar har alltid varit ett kännetecken för familjeföretaget. När Gunnar Persson inte fick finansiering att bygga en industrifastighet så placerades maskinerna helt enkelt utomhus.

RAPID GROWTH

Smidesbolaget in Degerfors grew from 7 to 65 employees and the company was sold to Avesta Sheffield in 2000. At that time, the plant was modernized and had become a full-scale “Steel Service Center” according to Anders Persson’s vision.

SCANDINAVIA'S LARGEST PRESS BRAKE

In 1991, Smidesbolaget invests in a new press brake – Scandinavia’s largest. The press brake is 13 meters long, weighs 280 metric tons and has a bending force of 2,000 metric tons.

In connection with the investment, Avesta Sheffield be comes a 20 % partner in Smidesbolaget, since they outsourced the bending of their most important product in Degerfors – stainless steel chemical tanker plate – to Smides bolaget.

WATERJET CUTTING AND BOAT BUILDING

Waterjet cutting of heavy plate was introduced early at Smides bolaget in Degerfors. The technology proved to be suitable for an odd project, namely the production of the template for Team EF’s sail boats for the Whitbread Round-the-World Race 97-98. The race consisted of a 51,500-kilometer sail in nine stages: Southampton – Cape Town – Freemantle – Sydney – Auckland – San Sebastiao – Fort Lauderdale – Baltimore – La Rochelle and back to Southampton.

The designer in the US, the boat builders in Gothenburg and the waterjet cutters in Degerfors could easily collaborate by using the then-new Internet. Drawings were transferred to machine control and templates for the boats were cut out. Then two similar boat hulls were cast using the templates, one for a boat with a female crew and one for a boat with a male crew. And the best was that one EF boat won!

Like the landlubbers we are, we never claimed our compensation, a sail on the winning boat!

Entrepreneurial spirit and unconventional solutions have always been a hallmark of the family business. When Gunnar Persson did not receive funding to build an industrial building, the machines were simply placed outdoors.
